Gata Kamsky Wins U.S. Title

Inside Chess by Yasser Seirawan

At seventeen, Gata is the youngest U.S. Champion since Bobby Fischer

Gata Kamsky convincingly won the 1991-92 U.S. Championship which was held in Los Angeles from July 28-August 9. For the second year in a row, elimination match play was used instead of the more traditional Round-Robin format. The top eight players were paired Wimbledon-style against the bottom eight. The matches were two games long, except for the final which was to be four. Ties were broken by two rapid chess games (Game/30), and any further ties were broken by fifteen minutes a side sudden-death games.
